    The Curriculum and Instruction department oversees, implements, and maintains compliance the following programs:

    The district has adopted the Colorado Academic Standards.  Through a thorough process of data driven instruction, teachers provide instruction to students based on their strengths and areas of needs.

    Colorado Preschool Program
    CPP is a state-funded program. Determination of eligibility, which is based on factors defined by the Colorado General Assembly, and enrollment are coordinated at a local level. Children are given an assessment of early readiness skills then needs are prioritized to determine eligibility. Screenings are conducted two to three times per year.

    The Highland School District contracts with the Highland Early Childhood Education Center for this program. We also provide early childhood special education services with the center. To contact the center, please call 970-834-1326.
    Gifted and Talented Programs
    The state of Colorado defines gifted and talented students as children between the ages of five and twenty-one whose abilities, talents and potential for accomplishment are so outstanding that they require special provisions to meet their educational needs. Children under five who qualify may also be served. Gifted students are capable of high performance in any or a combination of these areas:
    *General intellectual ability
    *Specific academic aptitude
    *Creative, productive thinking
    *Leadership and human relations skills
    *Visual and performing arts
    Homeless Education
    Definition of Homeless
    Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence:
    *Sharing of housing due to economic distress
    *Public/private place not designed for sleeping
    *Trailer parks
    *Cars, parks, and abandoned buildings
    *Substandard housing (inadequacy of the home)
    *Abandoned in hospitals
    *Unaccompanied youths who qualify as homeless
    *Awaiting foster care placement
