Ms. Eileen Barrett
I am happy to be part of the Highland Elementary staff and looking forward to the 2019- 2020 school year. As the music teacher here at Highland Elementary I have the privilege of being part of the creative musical process in which the students here Highland Elementary are involved.
Our music classes are buzzing with activity. Students create movement, sing, play rhythm instruments, barred instruments and various small percussion instruments as they move, sing, play, and create.
I love music and sharing it with my students. My goal is that the students here at Highland will develop an enjoyment of music and will carry that enjoyment with them throughout their lives. I have had several students over the years who have become teachers, some who have earned university degrees in music performance, and one former student who has completed his doctorate in trombone performance and is teaching at a university. While I am happy to have a part of their musical development, my goal for all students is lifelong music enjoyment. To that goal, I will be using the Orff Schulwerk process to teach music. I have completed two of the three levels to be certified as an Orff Schulwerk teacher. Orff Schulwerk is a process of teaching music that engages students to learn music using areas that they already enjoy--playing games, creative movement, folk dances, folk songs, singing, composing music, and playing instruments.
As a semi-professional musician, I have had tthe opportunity to play with many groups along the front range and eastern Colorado. Currently, I perform with five different musical groups. My instrument is trombone and I frequently bring my instrument to school to play for my students. In addition to playing trombone, I also enjoy flower gardening, hiking, riding my bicycle, and running 5k races. Cats, dogs, and bunnies are some of my favorite animals.
I am looking forward to a year filled with joyful music!
