    From Mrs. Burton’s Parlor

Good morning, everyone and Happy Friday! We have made it through the first week of virtual schooling! I know that there are a lot of new changes to how we regularly conduct school, and you all are doing a great job! I know this is not easy, but we can only ask for your best, and that is what you are presenting to us - thank you!

Some of you have asked me about the Newsela article. It is posted on Newsela and the class codes are on the 03/23 Announcements. You may have to click “More” to find them as I posted several links. So scroll down below this announcement and you will see them. Join the class out on www.newsela.com using your school gmail. It should be fairly easy to do this and let me know if you have any questions.

    Today’s reminders are:

    • Mrs. Burton is available from 8AM - 4PM via email
    • Mrs. Burton can schedule an appointment with you from 8AM - 3:30PM; just send and email to me and we can set up a time
    • Please complete the assigned article in your Newsela class and take the quiz
    • Please complete the questions in Google Classroom and answer the questions on the Stream within the classroom - this is a grade for advisory!

8th Grade Students: If you have your paperwork for Mrs. Rolfe - the HS counselor - for your course options for your freshman year, please email her a photo of your paperwork or email her to let her know what you would like to take if you do not have the paperwork. Her email is: trolfe@weldre9.k12.co.us

I will not be available tomorrow or Sunday prior to your assignment being due. Again, we are running regular school hours, so please let me know today if you have any questions or are struggling to get into any of the online SEL lessons materials.

A reminder that I am here and available to talk via email or Zoom video. I had a couple of video chats yesterday and they went well! It has been so great to connect with everyone who is emailing and checking in! Keep up the great work, everyone, and take care of yourself this weekend!

Good morning, everyone! I hope that you have been able to make connections with your teachers and everything is running smoothly for you technology wise.

We have our first SEL lesson today! There is a Newsela article I would like you to go out and read. I have the Newsela codes posted from 03/23. Please make sure to join your proper grade. The second portion of your assignment is to go out to your Google Classroom and respond to the questions that I have provided. I want this to be an open discussion for you all to respond to one another and to read what others are doing to stay healthy during this time.

I also want your feedback on possibly holding video classrooms and when you would like to schedule one with your advisory. We would have a set of questions we would answer during that time and we would be able to check in with one another. Your advisory teacher is also a part of your Google Classroom, so you would be able to talk to them as well. I will have this as one of my questions so be thinking about how you would like to connect as an Advisory.

    Today’s reminders are:

    • Mrs. Burton is available from 8AM - 4PM via email
    • Mrs. Burton can schedule an appointment with you from 8AM - 3:30PM; just send and email to me and we can set up a time
    • Please go out and watch the videos that were posted on 3/23 and answer the Google Form
    • Please  go out and join your Advisory Google Classroom - I have the link for the codes on 3/23 links - as tomorrow we will have our first social/emotional lesson
    • Please go out and join Newsela for your specific class so you are able to read the articles I assign you

A reminder that I am here and available and care about all of you! Today is a good day to have a good day!

Hello! Today starts our mode of schooling to a virtual platform! Though we are changing the way that we receive information starting today, it does not mean that we have to change having resources available to you!

Students, as your counselor, I will be available as if we were at the school building but now virtually! You may contact me via email for any questions that you have or to set up a virtual counseling session. I will be holding the virtual counseling sessions via Zoom, an online video chat host that is HIPPA compliant holding to the confidentiality regulations for counseling. Zoom will use your school email address so please reach me by using your school email. This ensures that I know who I am talking to and that I will be reaching you during the set time for the session. If you do not contact me through your school email address, I will not be able to host the virtual counseling session with you.

For parents, any questions you have pertaining to your child’s needs please feel free to contact me via email. I will not be able to take or receive phone calls from a phone anymore. Instead, I am offering appointments set up through the video chat forum, Zoom.

I will be available for 30 minute meetings and counseling sessions from 8AM - 4PM taking the first appointment at 8AM and the last appointment at 3:30PM. Please email me your availability and a little bit about what you would like to discuss.

As we are still holding to our regular school schedule for classes, I will have my Social/Emotional Lessons (SEL) once a week that are typically completed during Advisory. I will have these available through my website. I have created Google Classrooms for each Advisory where you will need to go out and add my class and complete the assignments that are given. Starting tomorrow, I will post the codes for each advisory and more information and directions for this side of counseling.

As always please feel free to email me and ask any questions. To start off today, I have attached an article that I found to be very helpful for me. I was able to use my coping strategies and monitor what Zone I was in during all of the news coming out about COVID-19 pandemic and how to remain in the Green Zone during this time. Watch my movie that goes along with the article and answer the Google Form to let me know what you have been using during this time to remain in the Green Zone! Talk to you soon!

 Hi Highland Huskies Families!

I am excited to join Highland Middle School for my second year as the school counselor and am looking forward to working with you and your children for another year!

Some little facts about me

I have lived in Colorado for the majority of my life and could not see myself living anywhere else in the US. I have worked in education for 5 years in the capacity of a high school mathematics teacher. In 2015, I made the decision to go back to my alma mater, the University of Northen Colorado, and study school counseling and obatin my masters and become a counselor. I am excited to work with younger adolescent students to help prepare them for high school and beyond. My husband of one year, our pug Digit and GSD Butch and I are enjoying another year continuing to build our lives here in the Northern Colorado community.

What role at HMS I play

It is important to me that students understand the every choice has a consequence, whether good or bad.  By bringing my experiences to a middle school, students will make this connection sooner, making the transitions of life easier. I want students to be accountable for their actions and take responsibility for their choices.

I will be working with your children by:

  • Classroom Lessons: I am scheduled to provide lessons for your students to their advisory/PODS classroom once a week. Lessons vary by age group but may include topics such as goal setting, social responsibility, anxiety, being a good friend, decision making, career awareness and exploration, etc...
  • Individual Sessions: I can meet with students to discuss any number of concerns. Students can self-refer to me by filling out an appointment request form.  These will be found in the hallway outside the main office, or they can get one from their teacher.  Parents and teachers can also request that I meet with a student.
  • Group Counseling Sessions: I meet with groups of students for structured, scheduled group sessions that focus on a particular topic.  These are created based on student need.  Groups will be scheduled on a rotation so students are not missing academics at length.  Parents will be notified and permission slips will be signed at that time. Parents may also recommend any student or topic if you think they would benefit from the experience.

In addition, I work with parents and outside professionals (pediatricians or therapists) to ensure that students' needs are met in the school setting.  It is important the lines of communication are open between school and home to ensure the most success of our students.
